It is clear from Al-Quran, Hadith and Ijma' Ulamak that to be obedient and being good to parents is ‘wajib’ (compulsory). The order and command to be obedient to parents announced together with the command to be obedient to Allah Himself. The command to be gratitude and thankful to parents also announced together with the command to be gratitude to Allah Himself.
Allah said in the Al-Quran:
(And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be dutiful to your parents)
Surah Al-Isra':23
In another verse Allah said:
(And we have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years, give thanks to me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination)
Surah Luqman:14
From sunnah, there are many hadith that show the obligatory to respect the parents.
One companion of the Prophet pbuh ask him: (What do you want me to do, o Rasulullah?)
Rasulullah said: (Respect your mother)
The man ask Rasulullah for 3 times but the answer is the same : respect your mother.
When the man ask for the fourth time, then Rasulullah said : Respect your father.
In another hadith Rasulullah pbuh said:
Fear Allah, perform prayer, give zakat, go to haj, reapect the parent, continue relationship, show honour to guest, encourage the good and prevent the evil)
From the verses of the Al-Quran and hadith, there are many statements that relate to the command on respectfulness of parents. Therefore Ijma' Ulamak agreed that ‘HUKUM’ on respectfulness of parents is an obligatory, to ignore it is a big sin in the sight of Allah.
